Nashville Public Library Launches Initiative To Preserve Decades Of Home Movies

Posted on September 26, 2025 by

In a bid to safeguard Nashville's rich cultural heritage, the Nashville Public Library has unveiled a "home movie project" aimed at digitizing decades of old family films. This initiative offers residents the opportunity to convert their VHS tapes into digital formats at no cost, ensuring that personal histories are preserved for future generations.

The project is open to all Nashville families, with applications accepted until October 23. The library seeks to collect and digitize home movies that capture everyday life in the city—from backyard games to outings at Radnor Lake State Park. By preserving these personal narratives, the library hopes to foster a deeper understanding and connection within the community.

Terri Luke, the director of the Nashville Public Library, emphasized the importance of this endeavor. "Sharing stories through personal, visual narratives allows us to connect with our neighbors and understand our shared history," Luke stated. The initiative underscores the library's commitment to safeguarding local history and promoting community engagement.

The digitization process will be handled by the library's team of professionals, ensuring high-quality transfers that maintain the integrity of the original footage. Once digitized, the films will be accessible through the library's digital archives, allowing residents to revisit and share their memories with ease.

This project also highlights the broader trend of communities recognizing the value of personal histories. By embracing technology, Nashville is taking proactive steps to preserve its past, ensuring that the stories of its residents continue to inspire and inform future generations.
